When sending an email you may receive the following error:

'451 Greylisted, please try again in 300 seconds'

Greylisting is one of the anti-spam features of SmarterMail and can be turned off by request if you are receiving a lot of errors.

What is Greylisting and how does it work?

Greylisting is a new tool in the fight against spam. It will temporarily block incoming mail from a sender and then returns the mail to the sender's mail server with a message saying effectively, "try again later." The sending server must then retry sending the mail after the Block Period but before the Pass Period (see below for definitions of these values).

Greylisting is effective because spammers will not usually bother to attempt a second delivery, but legitimate e-mail servers will.

Why use Greylisting?

Greylisting is a very effective method of spam blocking that comes at a minimal price in terms of performance. Most of the actual processing that needs to be done for Greylisting takes place on the sender's server. It has been shown to block upwards of 95% of incoming spam simply because so many spammers don't use a standard mail server which would do automatic retries.

To avoid the error please make sure SMTP Authentication is turned on in your email program.

In MS Outlook: Tools > Account Settings > select email account > More Settings > Outgoing Server > Check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".

Often this can occur if you're using a laptop through a non-supported provider like AOL or MSN. The best solution in this case is to use webmail (http://webmail.yourdomain.com) to check your mail while on the road.

Another cause could be that you do not have your mail client set to "This server requires authentication". Our mail server requires you to authenticate to our servers by first connecting to the mail server to check mail before sending mail. This ensures you have a valid mail account on our servers and are not a spammer.

Sometimes, if you do not set your mail client to send/receive every 5 or 10 minutes while you're composing a message, the server "times out" and forgets who you are. When you try to send the message you were writing, it doesn't recognize you and rejects your message. So, if you set your mail client to send and receive mail every 5 or 10 minutes, this problem should be clear up.
